Tread, Screen, Drift

2026 | LASER-ENGRAVED FOLDING WOOD SIDE TABLES | 26×20×14 INCHES EACH

Tread, Screen, Drift is an ongoing series that considers how ordinary surfaces and contact points carry marks of place, use, and everyday life.

BF Goodrich All-Terrain T/A tires appear everywhere on O‘ahu and in the countryside generally: on Tacomas, 4Runners, local vehicles. People might not consciously recognize the tread, but they know it. For All-Terrain Side Table, I etched that pattern onto a folding tray table. The tread is still about contact, but the grip is domestic. The violence or necessity of traction becomes something like the background texture of daily life.

For Screen Tide Table, the etching is of a window screen keeping out mosquitoes. Screens are membranes separating inside from outside while allowing air and light to pass through. Sometimes a lot of mosquitoes accumulate there, and now that boundary is commemorated as a material record of habitation.
