Based on images from local news reports, the drawings in Machines Are Left to Themselves depict illegal game rooms in Honolulu after the people have disappeared. Machines, stools, tables, cords, and signs emerge, sometimes barely, from the white pencil on colored paper. The rooms remain set up, waiting. I’m interested in the way the spaces never quite consolidate into complete scenes, as well as the mismatch between the lurid associations of illegal gambling and the quietness of the works. There are dozens of game room busts in the news every year.
