Machines Are Left to Themselves
2025-PRESENT | WHITE CHARCOAL ON COLORED PAPER | 16×24 INCHES EACH
Based on images from local news reports, Machines Are Left to Themselves depicts illegal game rooms in Honolulu after the people have disappeared. Machines, stools, tables, cords, and signs emerge——sometimes barely——from the white pencil on colored paper. The rooms remain set up, waiting. I’m interested in the way the spaces never quite consolidate into complete scenes, as well as the mismatch between the lurid associations of illegal gambling and the quietness of the works.
