Tunnels & Embeddings
2024-2025 | SLIPPERS & MIXED MEDIA | DIMENSIONS VARIABLE
This series started when I saw someone wearing slippers that were incredibly worn yet still serviceable. That made me interested in the lives that slippers imply, their histories, routes, weather, and memory. They represent where you’re from, how you move, what kind of work you do, and where you’ve been. I see in them the potential for a material but elusive language of resilience and imagination. As a source for contemporary art, slippers are clichés capable of redemption.
Some slippers in this series are worn down to almost nothing, others reshaped or patched in strange ways. The title refers to tunnels, as in pathways through, as well as embeddings, as in impressions made and held. I originally thought of the title while reading an article about avoiding detection on the internet using so-called tunneling and embedding, which made me remember the person wearing the slippers that started the series in the first place.
